“What important things?” Brandon left the rock and squatted down, flashlight on the ground as he sifted around for more samples.

Josh watched him, his thoughts momentarily distracted by the recent memory of Brandon’s fingers in his hair. A sudden bright beam stabbed him in the eyes and he twisted his head, blinking.

Brandon chuckled. “Sorry, but you were starting to space off.”

“Huh?” Josh blinked again.

“I asked what important things you had to do this weekend?”

Josh slid off the rock and sank to his knees and started helping Brandon. “Some more of our group are coming in,” he murmured. “They weren’t supposed to be here for another week, but I guess they decided to come early.”

“How many more?”

“Two families. The Westons and the Kimbles. Each has five members.” Josh picked up a chunk of rock and stared at it, eyes distant. “In the Weston family, there’s John and Rita. John is like our travel agent. When we have to go out of town to picket some event, he makes all the hotel arrangements and maps out the trip itself. His wife helps him.” He dropped the rock and looked at Brandon. “Then there’s John Jr.—or JJ as everyone calls him—he’s twenty-three and taking seminary classes. And then Sean and Shane, twins. They’re fourteen.”

“Do you like them?” Brandon asked. “Are they nice?”

Josh shrugged. “Shane is, though he just keeps to himself mostly. Sean…he’s okay, I guess. He hangs out with Patty and Grace and their friends, so…”

Brandon chuckled. “Enough said.”

Josh smiled and nodded. “Exactly.”

“And the Kimbles?”

“There’s Fred and Anna,” Josh said. “Fred is an artist, and he makes most of the signs. My father decides what goes on the signs, but Fred paints them. Anna, his wife, is mostly just a housewife. She doesn’t say a lot, just spends most of her time in the kitchen.”

“Their kids?”

“Lorrie, Sherry, and Danielle. Lorrie’s seventeen and has a crush on Elijah.”

“Does he like her?” Brandon had his doubts, considering the looks Elijah had been sending Marsha.

Josh shook his head. “No. I mean, he likes her in a friend way, but he doesn’t want her for a girlfriend.”

“And what about Sherry and Danielle? What’re they like?”

Josh sighed and made a face. “Sherry is fifteen and just like Patty. She’s Sean’s girlfriend. Danielle…” He shook his head, his voice lowering. “She’s thirteen. Really…withdrawn. Patty and Grace, and even Sherry, all call her a freak and won’t let her do things with them. They’re mean to her. Sean, too. I’ve tried talking to her but she doesn’t really talk back and doesn’t seem to want anyone to bother her. The only one I’ve ever seen her even kind of open up to is Shane.” He shrugged. “The others think Shane is weird, so maybe their outcast status helps them relate to each other, I don’t know.”

“That’s sad,” Brandon murmured. “But at least maybe they have a friend in each other.”

“Yeah,” Josh whispered.

“It’s good to have friends.”

Josh looked up and Brandon was smiling at him. “Yeah, it is.” Their eyes
